A Devil’s Advocate for Todd Akin

I’ll be candid here…

Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin

In my daily life, I cuss quite a bit.  It’s a habit that I developed when I was very young, and haven’t quite been able to kick.  I purposefully try to avoid using profanities in my writing, but I am definitely going to use one here, so…  If you have virgin ears (or eyes, as the case may be) you might want to turn away now.

This is the quote that got Missouri Senate hopeful Todd Akin into so much trouble:

“It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down,” Akin said.

This isn’t just stupid; it is so far beyond fucking stupid that I can fully understand why Akin’s current opponent in the Senate race donated money to his primary campaign.

Okay, I am done cussing, and now I am going to flip the script…

If you have no desire to witness a contrived defense of Akin, skip down to the next bolded line..!

I am going to play devil’s advocate here and attempt to defend the indefensible.

It won’t be easy!

I mean, “legitimate rape”..?  That doesn’t sound very easy to defend.

But we all know that some claims of rape are untrue, or even fabricated out of thin air.  Have we already forgotten the Duke LaCrosse team and Crystal Gale Magnum?  Have we forgotten about Tawana Brawley?  More to the point, I know for a fact that some women have engaged in completely consensual sex, and then have later made the accusation that they were raped.  What their motives may have been–revenge, money, or whatever–has no real bearing to the point I am trying to make here.

As for the next part of the sentence “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down”..?

All I can say, in this case, is that a woman who is being brutally assaulted physically and is terrified, in fear for her life..?  Such a condition doesn’t sound very conductive to conception to me.

Some married couples are able to have children at the drop of a hat.  I have always envied them, in a way, because when I was younger I always wanted to have a big family, even if families like the Duggars (of 19 Children and Counting fame) kind of freak me out a little.  But some couples have an extreme amount of trouble trying to conceive even under the best of conditions, and any fertility doctor would say that there are conditions which are more conductive to conception, and conditions that are not.

That’s about the best defense I can come up with, and I am DONE defending Akin, because he really doesn’t deserve it, and I feel a little dirty.  Anyone who skipped to this line would probably feel comfortable reading freely from here.

The truth is that there is a double-standard for us, as conservatives.  It isn’t just because the media has a different standard for us than they have for the liberals that they almost universally support.  It is because we hold ourselves to a higher standard, as well.  We can not expect the double-standard in the media to ever go away if we abandon the standards we hold for ourselves.

It just doesn’t work like that.

As a conservative candidate for the Senate, Akin should have been well aware of this, and thus his gaffe just isn’t excusable, despite my attempted defense of him.  He showed an astounding lack of sense in every aspect, and his selfishness in refusing to drop out of the Senate race may very well cause that seat to go to Democrat Claire McCaskill, whom I despise.

That’s really sad.  I hate to see it.

But I would hate to see us abandon any sense of principle in favor of crass political concerns much, much more.

If we do that, we might as well just give up and join the DNC.

Did McCain Make Hillary Toxic?

Lately I have had a sinking feeling in my gut.

Is he on his way out now?

Joe Biden has been running around the country making gaffes, which is fairly normal for him.  What isn’t normal is the number of gaffes made in a row, or the willingness of the media to cover them, however briefly.

Why does this matter..?

In politics, it is very hard to remove someone from a ticket without seeing a substantial backlash, unless there is a good and well-known reason for doing so.

To me, this all looks like a politically calculated set up.

The Obama campaign is stagnating.  They’re out of ideas, and have gone fully negative.  With no achievements to crow about, they have nothing positive with which to hang their hats upon.  Joe Biden doesn’t add anything for the Obama team this year.  In fact, he almost certainly represents a net loss for the campaign as a whole.  He keeps taking them off of their message.  He is seen as a buffoon everywhere except for the most liberal of circles.

He just isn’t good old “Uncle Joe” anymore.  He’s a liability.

Barack Obama does not like liabilities.

Enter Hillary Clinton.

Many pundits and politicians have made comments recently about the notion of replacing Biden with Clinton.  Seriously, I wish they would all shut the hell up!

I have nightmares about this scenario.

The Democrats would almost certainly win under this scenario.

After 4 years on the world stage, does Hillary still have presidential ambitions? Or has she set her sights elsewhere?

Like it, or not, Clinton’s positives are through the roof for a politician; higher than anyone currently in the race, regardless of the fact that she is one of the most corrupt figures in American political history.  Absence makes the heart grow fonder, I suppose.

If she still holds ambitions for the presidency, her best shot in 2016 would be from the catbird seat of Vice President.  Still, Clinton might be inclined to turn down such an offer, were one extended to her.  By all accounts, she just isn’t very fond of Barack Obama, and who could blame her after the tactics that Obama’s handler David Axelrod used against her in the last presidential primaries?

But her ambitions were enough to allow her to overcome those negative feelings and take the job as Secretary of State.  It isn’t a stretch to think that she would put her ambition for power ahead of everything else, given that she has done exactly that her entire life.

But will Obama even offer her the job?

Recently, I have been feeling it in the political winds that such a storm was brewing.

John McCain may have provided shelter from that storm.

During a recent interview on Fox News, McCain said that he would drop Biden and replace him with Hillary.  He also said that Hillary was not likely to go along with that plan, but I don’t trust that notion very much, and it isn’t really pertinent here.

What does matter is that the liberal blogosphere was completely apoplectic about the notion of taking advice from that rotten, evil bastard John McCain.

Ah, good old childish liberals.  So very predictable.

Was McCain being a Jedi Master of reverse psychology?  Probably not.  He was most likely just vocalizing what many of us were thinking.  Again, I wish some people would shut the hell up!  But in this case, I am actually glad he did it.  McCain, wittingly or not, has shored up support for Biden to remain on the Obama ticket.

And John, if this works, I forgive you for everything!

Crazy Uncle Joe Strikes Again!

Vice President Joe Biden is a walking, talking gaffe machine on steroids.

Liberals love “Uncle Joe”.

The President of our Senate literally does nothing more than run around the country saying stupid things.  That is his entire job, and he does it well.

For the life of me, I can not think of a single thing that this man has accomplished in his entire career.  And no, liberals, managing to get himself re-elected to the Senate a number of times doesn’t count as an accomplishment, as much as you may think that getting elected is all that matters.

I’m beginning to think that Obama may indeed be a brilliant strategist.  He knew that his policies would go over like a stone for most people, and he needed insurance against getting impeached.

Enter Joe Biden.

No one wants to see that guy become President of anything.

That the media consistently sweeps under the rug the rantings of good old “Uncle Joe” is proof enough of their extreme bias.  But Biden’s latest trip into brain-addled psychedelia crosses lines, even for him.

In front of a small crowd in North Carolina, Biden made some of the most heinous remarks I’ve heard yet, and I hope that at least some people in the media call him out for them.  I’m not even going to quote him.  You really just need to watch it for yourself.  It’s short.

.

I’m not even sure to start with this one, but I may actually be more frightened of the people fawning in the background with their glassy eyes and painted smiles, dutifully and mechanically slapping their hands together in response to a statement that anyone with even a modicum of intelligence would reject instantly.

The fact that Joe Biden feels comfortable enough to bring up Paul Ryan’s deceased father says it all.  He knows he won’t be called on it, despicable as it may be.  Ryan’s father died when he was fifteen years old.  That should be off-limits for any politician.  But the Democrats have no class whatsoever, and the double-standard in play allows them to get personal in the ugliest of ways, while the media happily goes along with their narrative that Republicans are equally ugly for daring to talk about the actual policies of this president.

But “Show me your budget”..?

Really, Joe..?!

How insane is that?

So, by your own standards, Joe, since you have no budget, you have no values at all..?

That one I can buy.

Even assuming that Biden had anything at all to do with the Obama budget proposals, which is unlikely, those budgets failed to get a single vote even from Democrats in the Senate, much less Republicans.  Given the disastrous end to his budget proposals, Obama might actually be considering giving Biden the credit for them.

Biden, as President of the Senate, has not seen a budget passed in three years, despite the fact that the Constitution requires one to be passed.  Apart from Obama’s laughable efforts, the Democrats haven’t even bothered to propose a budget, at all.

But Paul Ryan has, and the Democrats are terrified of it.

Did the Democrats work with Ryan to compromise and find bi-partisan solutions?  They’re supposed to be all about that, right?

On the contrary, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid won’t even allow a vote in the Senate on any budget passed in the House, because he knows they have a good chance of passing in the Senate, even under a Democrat majority.

Talk about the “Party of NO”.

Yes, the Democrats are terrified of the Ryan budget proposals, even though it would be Romney’s proposals taking the lead in a Romney/Ryan administration.  But what terrifies them even more is the contrast of a sensible, intelligent Ryan to the senseless, unintelligible Biden that will become more apparent the closer we get to November, despite the media’s efforts to hide it.

Who would be a better leader for our country?

Democrats don’t want Americans asking that question.
